Inside our body are organs that work all day and night, even when we sleep. The brain is inside the head, protected by the hard skull. It thinks, remembers, and controls the whole body. The heart is in the chest, and it pumps blood to every part of the body. Put your hand on your chest — you can feel it beating. The lungs are also in the chest. When we breathe in, the lungs fill with air, and when we breathe out, they empty.
The stomach is below the chest. When we eat, food goes down a tube into the stomach, where it is mixed and broken down, and then into the intestines, where the goodness passes into the blood. Bones form a frame called the skeleton that holds the body up and protects the soft organs. There are more than two hundred bones in the body! Muscles pull on the bones to move us.
Example: Take a deep breath in and feel your chest get bigger — that is your lungs filling. Then run on the spot for one minute and feel your heart beat faster!
