Day 1

Families Can Be Different

Tap 🔊 next to any sentence to hear it read aloud.

A family is a group of people who live together, care for each other, and share their joys and troubles. Families are not all the same. Some children live with only their mother and father and brothers or sisters. This is called a nuclear family. Other children live with grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins all in one house. This is called a joint family. Some children live with just one parent, or with grandparents, or with an adopted family. Every kind of family is a real family as long as its members love and look after one another.

Family members are related to each other. Your father's parents and your mother's parents are your grandparents. Your parents' brothers and sisters are your uncles and aunts, and their children are your cousins. Families change over time: babies are born, children grow up, people marry, and grandparents grow old. Some families move to a new town for work, and some members live far away but stay in touch. In India, many families live in joint families in villages, while in Bangkok many families are small.

Example: Draw a family tree. Put yourself at the bottom, your parents above you, and your grandparents at the top. Add uncles, aunts, and cousins on the sides. Count how many people are in your family tree.
